As a gay man, it breaks my heart to hear of events like the one that occurred this past Saturday. It also breaks my heart that we are used as political pawns in this country, but that is for another blog. This week I would like to introduce you guys to The Trevor Project. For more information on The Trevor Project, their website can be found at https://www.thetrevorproject.org/
The Trevor Project began with a mission to end suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning young people. Their vision is to see a world where all LGBTQ young people see a bright future for themselves. They provide information & support to LGBTQ young people 24/7, all year round.
To give back to the Trevor Project, they will train you to be a crisis support counselor. As a trained Trevor counselor, you’ll support LGBTQ young people remotely by phone, text & chat. The Trevor Project is looking for a volunteer just like you!
You don’t need a degree or a license to become a trained Trevor counselor, but the role does require passion and commitment. They're looking for volunteers who…
Have a passion for supporting LGBTQ young people
Are 18+ years old
Are located in the United States
Can make a minimum one-year commitment after graduating from training, with one 3-hour shift per week
Meet our technology requirements and are comfortable using a variety of technology platforms
Are open to new experiences and receiving feedback
Have access to a private space for remote volunteering
If this sounds like a volunteer opportunity for you, you can send an email to volunteer@thetrevorproject.org to get started, or you can view their website here: https://www.thetrevorproject.org/volunteer/
The Trevor Project has been filling a need in society for over 25 years now, and could have been instrumental in helping me out as a young gay kid. In the 1990's, we watched AIDS desimate our community when seemingly no one cared about a bunch of fags dying and bullying of the LGBTQ+ community ran rampant throughout our schools. I also watched the senseless murder of Mathew Shepherd, so I chose to remain in the closet well into my twenties. It was not a healthy choice, and I let the fear of the time keep me from being my authentic self.
LGBTQ+ kids have resources now like the Trevor Project to help deal with life's stress as a gay person. If you want to be an ally and help a kid that has nowhere else to turn, I urge you to volunteer with the Trevor Project. We can always use more allies like you!
Thank you Kings and Queens for tuning into this week's volunteer opportunity. It's our job as the rulers of our own domains to care for everyone in our power, even when they are not like us. Please keep doing all the good you can and do not forget to take care of yourself too!
