For many years, the LGBTQ+ community has worked hard for equality and inclusion around the world. Although there have been many advances in this field, there is still much work to be done in many parts of the world, including the United States. This time, we will focus on Russellville, Arkansas, where the LGBTQ+ community has been fighting for their rights for years.

How does Russellville, Arkansas rank for LGBTQ+ equality

DEAD LAST! In fact, ARKANSAS ranks dead last in the nation for LGBTQ+ equality. At least that's true when it comes to government policies and economic opportunity.

The Out Leadership’s 5th Annual State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index found Arkansas fell to the bottom of the list for its equality ranking score of 32 out of 100. In 2022 the Natural State was ranked number 46 with a 35.93 ranking.

But what about within Arkansas; where does Russellville stand among the rest of the cities? Well, it's no different than the rest of the cities in the state. It can't be because the Arkansas Intrastate Commerce Improvement Act of 2015, or Act 137, prohibits local governments from enacting civil rights protections for LGBTQ individuals that are lacking at the state level.

In 2018 Fayetteville challenged Act 137 and adopted a city ordinance banning discrimination based on a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. Of course, the then attorney general, Leslie Rutledge, challenged the ordinance, and in 2019 the Arkansas Supreme Court struck it down.

But it doesn't stop there. The Republican-controlled Arkansas Legislature is constantly busy looking for ways to keep Arkansas at the bottom of the list for its equality ranking. It's like they're on a mission to be the best at being the worst. But in 2022 Arkansas voters did have the guts to say no to a nefarious amendment to the Arkansas Constitution that would further limit the protections of the LGBTQ+ community.

That vote was a check mark for love.

Sadly, though, the legislature can't let go of their hate. More anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is being introduced and passed in Arkansas during the 2023 legislative session.

Russellville cannot avoid adhering to the anti-LGBTQ+ laws the state legislature passes, but the people of the city don't have to go along with the Republican-controlled legislature and state-driven hate. We are better than that.

The Impact of Arkansas State Laws on the Rights of the LGBTQ Community

Since the passage of the Arkansas Religious Freedom Protection Act in 2015, the LGBTQ+ community has faced many challenges in Arkansas. The law allows businesses and organizations to refuse to provide services to LGBTQ+ people if it violates their religious beliefs. Additionally, Arkansas is one of the few states that does not have laws protecting LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in the workplace, housing, health care, and other settings.

Legislators continue creating barriers to equality for all. Voters can change that. Every two years we have an opportunity to change the face of the Arkansas legislature by voting for representatives and senators that will support the rights of all
