The Kraken Lady: From Trump's Ally to State Witness

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

Sidney Powell, a former lawyer for Trump, has pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor charges of conspiracy to interfere with the 2020 election. Powell earned the nickname Kraken Lady after telling everyone she would "release the Kraken" and expose evidence of a rigged election. Now, she has become a witness for the prosecution in the extensive Georgia election interference case.

Sidney Powell pleaded guilty before Judge Scott McAfee

She has pleaded guilty to conspiring to breach the election systems in Coffee County, Georgia. She admitted to her role in the crime and recorded a proffer video with prosecutors. She has also agreed to testify in future cases and has written an apology letter to the citizens of Georgia. Additionally, she has agreed to pay almost $9,000 in fines.

Sidney Powell gained notoriety among Trump fanatics and election conspiracy theorists for her promise to expose widespread election fraud. However, her grand claims have now been shattered by the reality of her guilty plea. Powell's plea agreement includes six years of probation, hefty fines, and the requirement to testify against her co-defendants, potentially including Trump himself.

Powell's conspiracy theories about election interference were not only embraced by Trump's supporters but also featured prominently on Fox News. Her unhinged claims were even central to Dominion Voting Systems' successful defamation lawsuit against the media outlet. Now, as Powell faces her own $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit from Dominion, it becomes clear that the Kraken she promised to release was not as formidable as she had portrayed.

Sidney Powell was an integral part of Trump's desperate attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. She was part of a notorious election conspiracy news conference held at the Republican National Committee headquarters, alongside Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani. During the conference, Powell made outrageous claims about the influence of communist money from countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and China on the U.S. election. These claims were widely debunked, but they played a significant role in fueling Trump's baseless allegations of election fraud.

Along with former national security adviser Michael Flynn, Sidney Powell participated in a contentious meeting that took place in the White House on December 18, 2020, where they presented outlandish ideas about overturning the election. Sources previously described the session as one that began as an impromptu gathering but devolved and eventually broke out into screaming matches at certain points as some of Trump’s aides pushed back on Powell and Flynn. Still, Trump used their ideas from this meeting to spread more lies about the election and fuel the anger of his base.

With her guilty plea, Powell is now positioned as a state witness in the election interference case. This development puts immense pressure on her co-defendants, including Giuliani and Kenneth Chesebro, to consider plea deals and potentially flip on Trump. Powell's decision to cooperate with prosecutors is a significant blow to Trump's claims of being a victim of election interference.

As Powell becomes a key witness against Trump, the implications for the former president are significant. Her guilty plea undermines Trump's repeated assertions that the charges he faces are merely "election interference." With Powell's cooperation, the case against Trump and his associates gained credibility, making it increasingly difficult for him to distance himself from the conspiracy and disinformation campaign that followed his electoral defeat.

Despite her history of spreading zany conspiracy theories, Powell's guilty plea represents a rare moment of honesty. When asked by the judge if there were enough facts to support her guilty plea, Powell responded affirmatively. This admission pulls back the curtain on the scam that Trump and his cronies have been running since the 2020 election, exposing the lies and deceit that have fueled their baseless claims.

Sidney Powell's guilty plea marks a significant turning point in the election interference case against Trump and his allies. As she becomes a state witness, Powell's cooperation could have far-reaching implications for the former president. The unraveling of her conspiracy theories and the exposure of her lies highlights the importance of truth and accountability in the democratic process. The Kraken may have been released, but it was ultimately tamed by the weight of evidence and the pursuit of justice.
