The Devastating Consequences of Treating Gays and Lesbians as Social Outcasts

Updated: Jul 4, 2023

As a member of society, it is essential to recognize the importance of inclusion and acceptance of all individuals regardless of their ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Unfortunately, social outcasts still exist in society, and one group that continues to face discrimination is those who identify as LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, & Queer). The stigmatization of this community has had severe consequences that go beyond the social realm. In this article, I will discuss the devastating consequences of treating gays and lesbians as social outcasts.

Understanding Social Outcasts and the LGBTQ Community

Before discussing the consequences of stigmatizing the LGBTQ community, it is important to understand what social outcasts are. Social outcasts are individuals who are marginalized and excluded from society due to various reasons, including race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion. The LGBTQ community is one group that is often excluded from society due to their sexual orientation. This exclusion can lead to prejudice, hate, and fear towards the LGBTQ community.

Prejudice, Hate, and Fear Towards the LGBTQ Community

Unfortunately, prejudice, hate, and fear towards the LGBTQ community are prevalent in society. Cody and I noticed an uptick in this since the 2015 presidential election. These negative attitudes can lead to harmful behaviors towards individuals who identify as LGBTQ. For the 1st time in my adult life, I felt unsafe in my hometown because of the political rhetoric that year. Discrimination can lead to a lack of access to healthcare, housing, employment, and education. Discrimination can also lead to verbal and physical abuse towards individuals who identify as LGBTQ. These negative attitudes can also lead to the stigmatization of mental health issues.

Devastating Consequences of Treating Gays and Lesbians as Social Outcasts - Mental Health Issues and Stress

The stigmatization of the LGBTQ community can have severe consequences on mental health. The stress of being excluded from society can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. This has been true for me my entire adult life. LGBTQ youth are especially at risk of mental health issues due to the fear of coming out and being rejected by their families and peers. I stayed in the closet until age 25 because of that fear. The stress and anxiety of being excluded from society can also lead to increased rates of substance abuse and suicide.

The Impact on Education - Creating a Gap in Learning

The stigmatization of the LGBTQ community can also impact education. LGBTQ students who are excluded from society may feel unsafe at school and may not have access to supportive resources. This was very true for Cody while attending Booneville, AR Public Schools. The fear of being outed can lead to decreased attendance and academic performance. Teachers and school administrators may also contribute to the stigmatization of the LGBTQ community by not providing inclusive curricula and resources, or by not showing the LGBTQ student the same respect as other students. Fortunately, Cody found alternative school and teachers who cared so he was able to graduate in an otherwise abusive environment. That's a rare blessing for a young gay person in the early 2000s.

The Impact on Society - Creating a Gap in Social Integration

The stigmatization of the LGBTQ community can also have a broader impact on society. The exclusion of individuals who identify as LGBTQ can lead to a gap in social integration. This exclusion can lead to a lack of diversity in communities, workplaces, and other social settings. The stigmatization of the LGBTQ community can also lead to a lack of understanding and empathy toward this group, which can perpetuate negative attitudes and behaviors.

The Importance of Inclusion and Acceptance

It is essential to recognize the importance of inclusion and acceptance of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation. Inclusive environments can lead to increased mental health and social integration. Inclusive environments can also lead to increased academic performance and creativity. Inclusive environments can also lead to a better understanding and empathy toward those who identify as LGBTQ. Inclusion and acceptance help LGBTQ persons become more valuable members of society.

Ways to Support the LGBTQ Community and Reduce Prejudice

There are various ways to support the LGBTQ community and reduce prejudice. One way is to increase education and awareness about the LGBTQ community. This education can include an inclusive curriculum, support groups, and resources for LGBTQ individuals. Another way is to increase representation of the LGBTQ community in media and other social settings. This representation can lead to increased understanding and empathy towards this group.

Resources for Mental Health Support for the LGBTQ Community

love is love

There are various resources available for mental health support for the LGBTQ community. The Trevor Project is a national organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth. The GLBT National Help Center provides free and confidential peer support and resources to LGBTQ individuals. It is essential to seek help if you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues.

Conclusion and Call to Action for a More Inclusive Society

In conclusion, treating gays, lesbians, and transgender persons as social outcasts can have devastating consequences on mental health, education, and social integration. It is essential to recognize the importance of inclusion and acceptance of all individuals, regardless of who they are. By increasing education and awareness, increasing representation, and providing resources for mental health support, we can create a more inclusive society. Our community does not want to be treated better than you or have any more rights than you, We just want to be treated equally because everyone deserves dignity and respect. It is up to each individual to take action and make a difference in the lives of their LGBTQ neighbors as well as their own lives.
