I've never slept well.
Have you?
Not having a healthy sleep cycle has been an issue my entire adult life. It's something I've shared with my mother and my mother's mother. Maybe it's genetic or an ancestral curse, or maybe for me, it's just poor habits. Recently I've seen that a lack of sleep could be tied to nutrition, which I have been working to improve. Getting better sleep because of better food is another motivator to eat a well-balanced diet and take supplements where my diet fails me.
My lack of normal sleep drives Cody crazy. He has already fallen asleep for the night and I am truly jealous that he will sleep straight through until his alarm goes off. He doesn't understand why I cannot do the same. Oh, how I wish I could!
I'm almost positive the lack of sleep for me is a mixture of genetics, learned behaviors, and diet. I started taking melatonin a few nights ago and it has helped more than I thought it would. I have also cut the time spent in the bedroom prior to sleeping way down and created more of a sleep-promoting space instead of reading and watching t.v. there. The CDC also suggests not eating or drinking alcohol prior to sleep, keeping a strict routine by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day including the weekends, and exercising daily. You can find all the CDC's recommendations here: https://www.cdc.gov/sleep/about_sleep/sleep_hygiene.html
Just like my commitment to daily exercise and a healthy food regimen, I am also commiting to doing the things it takes to sleep well on a daily basis. Hopefully, you are working on a healthier lifestyle too!
