October 28th is National Make a Difference Day for 2023. I'd like to do something this year for the occasion and hope to give you an idea of something to do too! That's what life is all about - People helping people! What better day to do that? National Make a Difference Day of course.
My first experience with National Make A Difference Day was in 1997 when my civics teacher Alene Bynum organized an event for my Senior civics class. I don't remember the elderly lady's name, but I do remember the house and project well. Ms. Bynum secured donations from local businesses and time from a local carpenter so that we could weatherize her home in time for winter. We added insulation in the attic, insulated the water heater, painted the exterior, filled cracks and crevices with caulk, and sealed doors and windows with weatherstripping. These improvements made the home a lot more cozy and lowered the owner's energy bill too! The picture below is me and Jo (my mom) on that day. It was a great event that made a lasting impression!
National Make a Difference Day is the biggest community service day each year in the United States. It began in 1992, started by an organization out of Georgia called Points of Light and founded by none other than George H.W. Bush the 41st US President in collaboration with "USA Weekend" magazine. Each year, the US celebrates National Make a Difference on the 4th Saturday of October to create a day where people can unite and make a tangible impact on society through community service.
This year's Make a Difference Day is this coming Saturday - October 28th, 2023 and according to Convoy of Hope, there are several different ways you can give back to your community. They include:
Volunteering at a Local Nonprofit Organization
Organizing a Community Cleanup
Supporting Local Businesses & Initiatives
Spreading Kindness & Compassion
Mentoring or Tutoring
Organizing a Fundraising Event
Here at King Ryan Radio, we have highlighted many All-Star organizations that could use your help during National Make A Difference Day 2023. I encourage you to reach out to one of them, or a charitable organization near and dear to your own heart and get out this Saturday to Make a Difference!
