Among the dynamic speeches delivered at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week, the one by Hillary Clinton was perhaps the most surprising.
“It certainly is a speech that I felt I needed to give, and only I could have given,” Clinton tells @joehagantv in a Vanity Fair interview. “There still is this sense of 2016 being unresolved, and that’s one of the common themes I hear. It certainly is what people tell me.”
Basking in the opportunity to reverse roles with Trump, Hillary highlighted the similarities between the disparagements she faced from the Republican candidate in 2016 and the ongoing insults he directs at Harris in 2024. "It's hardly surprising that he's fabricating stories about Kamala's record, ridiculing her name and her laughter. Does that sound familiar?"
Hillary then contrasted Trump's status as a convicted felon against Harris's background as a former prosecutor. "Kamala put murderers and drug dealers behind bars. Donald Trump dozed off during his own trial."
In that instant, the Democratic delegates gathered at the DNC erupted into spontaneous chants of "Lock him up! Lock him up!" mirroring the chant once aimed at Hillary by Trump's supporters, with his approval, in 2016.
Hillary, exercising the restraint befitting a former secretary of state, remained silent. Yet, her smile said it all. She resonated with her audience at that moment, united in the sentiment that vindication for her and her followers was at hand.
During her interview, Hillary described her speech as cathartic. Watching and listening to her evoked emotions in me due to the unresolved injustices of 2016. I found myself clapping, crying, and joining in the DNC crowd's chant of "lock him up." Her speech acted as a catharsis for me, and undoubtedly for the millions who felt our world shatter when the injustices of the 2016 election remained unresolved. I hold onto the belief that one day it will be revealed that Hillary was the true victor and the rightful president-elect.
