Arkansas Citizens for the Right to Decide: Put Abortion on the Ballot

Updated: Aug 13, 2023

I am curious if there are any efforts underway to prepare a citizen-led ballot initiative for the 2024 election in Arkansas that would provide women with the necessary reproductive healthcare, especially after the recent victory for voters in Ohio. So, I did a little research and share my thoughts on putting abortion on the ballot. I encourage you to do your own research.

Last fall, I asked members of the Arkansas legislature and an attorney what they are doing to put the issue of abortion on the ballot. While they weren't able to give me a firm answer at the time, they did tell me that they were in the discussion and/or planning stages of what to do and that, yes, something was going to be done. This gave me a sense of reassurance and since then I have been patiently watching and waiting for signals that plans are beginning to take shape and action is being taken to address this important issue.

The current state of abortion rights in Arkansas.

Everyone in Arkansas is well aware that in 2022, the far-right conservative legislature in the state banned abortion for girls and women, with an exception only to save the life of the mother. Still, doctors are not sure what it means to "save the life of the mother." Act 308

Why put abortion rights on the ballot in Arkansas?

  • Protect access to abortion care.

  • The legislative passed ban is out of step with voters.

  • Let the people decide.

Activists are currently making plans to create a citizen-led ballot initiative in order to establish abortion rights as a constitutional right.

  • In 2022 the state legislature tried to undermine the ability of voters to change a measure they don't agree with.

  • Activists got busy and their proposed ballot initiative Issue 2 which would have required a 60% vote to pass future ballot initiatives was resoundingly defeated by a whopping 59% of Arkansas voters. Find the results here!

  • The proposal would have made it much harder for activists to pass any new laws.

It was a significant win for grassroots activists, highlighting the value of their work to the people of Arkansas. It was a remarkable triumph that demonstrates how the collective power of the people still holds sway in the voting booth.

Now, this fall and in next year’s election, national liberal groups are planning to invest more heavily in ballot measure campaigns, seeing them as vehicles both to protect access to abortion care and to amplify their broader political message that abortion bans are out of step with voters.
